Looks like you choose one of the most beautiful islands Malaysia has to offer. Well, there are 2 types of living there, one is resort-styled, and the other is just getting a chalet by the beach or in the villages. Most of the chalets are run by the villages themselves. there are generally 5-6 spots around the island where you need a ferry service to access.

The ferry usually leaves the town of Mersing a few times a day and it'll stop at every main village on the island. Tickets can be bought at the jetty in Mersing.

To get to Tioman another way is by flying there as they have a tiny little airport enough for a 12 seater to land.

Other way there is by road to Mersing then ferry. Buses from the city of KL depart to Mersing. Check at the local bus terminal in the city(Puduraya)

On things to do there, absolute nothing! Just kidding... heh, there's a lot of Snorkeling, Diving, Fishing and just lazying all day. The bigger resorts offer some water sports, but Tioman is just generally a laid back place to chill out. No, it's NOT like Phuket ot Samui.

Tioman Island is also a Marine Park, so there is no fishing in the vicinity around the island. There's also a jungle walk where you got to ask the villages about it.

Well, hope this is sufficient enough, if not when you get there, just ask the locals what else is there to do.

Oh, there's also lots of local restaurants and beer can be bought there.
The ferry progressively stops at four resorts along the north side of the island. They are not interlinked by road although the first two might be. We stayed at the fourth one called Salang. Orginally were booked in for two nights but of course that became four pretty quick.

Excellent for snorkelling. Not much of a beach, but once you are in the water you are away with the fish. As the saying goes, like swimming in champagne. There is a non poisonous underwater prickle that you can stand on. If you do, don't try and get them out. You just tap them so as they break down and enter your blood stream and leave via your liver and kidneys.

When I was there the electricty was unreliably generated on the spot but that wasn't an issue. Only saw one part of the island but always wanted to get back.
As a side note, it was where the film South Pacific was made.

Pulau Tioman , Tioman also spelled Tiuman island in the South China Sea, about 40 miles (65 km) off Kuala Rompin, Peninsular (West) Malaysia. It has an area of 53 square miles (137 square km) and is 13 miles (21 km) long and 2 to 8 miles (3 to 13 km) wide. Tioman's economy, traditionally based on fishing, is now focused on tourism. Its main settlements, Kampung Tekek on the west coast and Teluk Juara on the east, are linked by a rough, hilly track.

Tioman's beaches were depicted in the 1958 movie South Pacific as "Bali Hai". In the 1970s, Time magazine selected Tioman as one of the world’s most beautiful islands. The densely forested island is still sparsely inhabited, but is surrounded by numerous white coral reefs, making it a haven for scuba divers from around the region.

Already the most developed of Malaysia's eastern islands, a controversial RM 40 million marina project for Kampung Tekek, complete with 175-meter cargo jetty, now threatens to speed up the pace of development on Tioman considerably - so get there before it's too late!

The beginnings of Tioman Island

Imagine…. A long time ago, when the world was filled with strange plants and creatures, shrouded in thick fog, ….where lands were vast - covered in ice and the sea levels were low. The islands on our east coastal shores were peaks or slopes of mountains, majestically overlooking the rough, pounding waves far below.

Then the earth started to warm up and the ice began to melt. Low lying areas were flooded and peaks were isolated from the mainland and so became islands.

Tioman today sits 30km away from the mainland.

39km long and 12km wide, Tioman today was once a monsoon shelter for merchant ships, war ships, a haughty bunch of pirates and a few families of fishermen. The first written record of Tioman was found in the journals of Arabic merchants who came this way some time before 1,000AD. The Indian, Persian and Chinese traders followed suit.

When the South China Sea route was ‘discovered’ by eager merchants from China, many locations along the Malaya Peninsular finally opened to traders. One of them being Tioman today. Not only was the island a perfect shelter from the monsoon storms and an ideal place to stopover for fresh water and wood, but the people also traded with these foreign merchants. The Chinese wanted sea produce and camphor wood; the Indian traders loaded their ships to the brim with betelnut, found in abundance on the island whilst the Arabs were in search of scented woods (such as aloe wood, camphor and sandalwood), for ivory and ebony, rice, gold and bamboo. The seafarers also used the island as a navigational marker - the point to turn north east for Cambodia upon identifying the island. It was noted now from abundant evidence that many of these traders set up camp at Nipah beach.

But it was not all dandy for Tioman Island today. In 1830, pirates marauded the island and took away 70 locals for the thriving slave markets. Fear sent the remaining villagers scampering off to the mainland leaving the island uninhabited until 15 years later when the waters in the area were rid of pirates.

Slowly, villagers trickled back and life returned to its island pace. However, in 1926, an outbreak of malaria killed many islanders and once again, the island was abandoned. Many of the homes of villagers were left derelict and the lands that they made a living from were reclaimed by the jungle. During the 2nd World War, a small detachment of the Japanese army was sent to set up a watch base on Tioman. After the war, Tioman fell into oblivion until it was rediscovered by movie makers. Fame and fortune followed suit and Tioman became the Paradise Island of Bali Hai in the musical ‘South Pacific’. The listing as one of the top ten islands in the world by TIME magazine in the 1970’s made the island popular beyond its dreams and visitors have been pouring in since to savour that little piece of island paradise.
